Outcasted

Outcasted was a student project at KISD, with the title Games for Change (G4C). The outline of the project was the creation of a serious game for the Games for Change Europe competition/festival. Within a small student team, we created the serious VR game Outcasted: a simulation of a homeless person.

There is nothing much you can do in this game. Basically, you slip into the role of Paul, a guy who lives on the street of a generic city. The only action you can perform while sitting on the sidewalk is looking at passers-by, hoping that they’ll give you something. Most of the time, you are frustrated because of the lack of power and control in the game. Outcasted aims to raise awareness of the most invisible and weakest social groups in seemingly every country in the world. The gameplay is straightforward: nevertheless, it causes intense feelings of emptiness, frustration, and empathy towards homeless people. Outcasted won the G4C competition in 2014.

Oculus Rift DK1

Outcasted was my first step into the creative world of game engines and interactive 3D. Back then, the first VR hardware, Oculus Rift DK1, had been funded on Kickstarter. I am glad that my journey in the virtual world and its creation started right at the roots of this evolving technology.
