Goethestr. 56

The Goethestrasse 56 project is a VR learning application from the Goethe-Institut Washington that uses virtual reality to create an immersive learning environment for German learners.

If you want to discover a piece of Germany with all your senses, visit the family livin at Goethestrasse 56. Using VR glasses, you can take part in their everyday life, solve small tasks with them and learn German words in a playful way.

prototype

Collaborating with Prof. Björn Bartholdy and the Cologne Game Lab, I spearheaded the development of an innovative project commissioned by the Goethe-Institut. Over several months, our team crafted a prototype aimed at exploring the way German is learned within virtual environments.

Our primary focus was twofold: to ensure the learning experience was not only child-friendly but also intuitively designed for individuals with minimal to no prior German proficiency (A1, A2 levels).

Central to our mission was the creation of a robust conceptual framework that allows for seamless expansion and adaptation, catering to diverse learning styles and preferences. Our aim was to transcend traditional language learning barriers and pave the way for accessible, engaging, and effective education.

concept

In the beginning stages of our project, we came up with a special idea: immersing learners into the fabric of daily life. Picture yourself stepping into the shoes of the Kremer family, residents of Goethestr. 56 in Germany. Each family member is busy with their own tasks: The mother is working in the home office, the father is cooking
spaghetti bolognese in the kiitchen, the daughter is doing her homework, and the son is searching for his teddy bear.

In this immersive scenario, you become an integral part of the Kremer family dynamic, invited to lend a hand and contribute to their daily routines.
