Holomarket
Holomarket is a multiplayer room-scaled virtual reality experience created for the new German Museum based in Nürnberg. The main subject of the museum is the interpretation of our future: what will the future hold, how will we live in 20, 50, or 100 years’ time and how will technology and society develop? In this context, The German Museum has launched a research project, Holomarket: a permanent space of 60m² dedicated to VR content. Cologne Game Lab was commissioned for the first VR experience.
The visitors to the Museum are invited to virtually experience the Nürnberg of the future. The events take place in 2051 in the first robotic fleamarket. The market is stationed on a small island close to the Museum. Together with other participants (4 people can join the experience simultaneously), you are invited to rummage through the stalls and stands, interacting with future technology and gadgets.
art
As the art director of this project, over the eighteen months of development, I defined the artistic style and production pipeline of the experience. Not the easiest task, considering the performance limitations of the Oculus Quest mobile VR device. The vast number of details – like the interactive objects or the rich environment – required careful planning and optimization to run smoothly on mobile devices. Besides the conceptual work and supervision of the very talented art team, I worked on this project as an environment artist.
